Dean Rea recently began his 45th year of teaching at the UO School of Journalism and Communication. After 3 retirements, Rea returned once again this fall to instruct the Reporting II class.Dean Rea is a retired newspaper journalist and a retired university professor who lives in Eugene, Oregon.

He learned the letterpress printing trade as a boy and began his newspaper career while a student at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield. In 1951 he received a graduate degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.

He edited an armed services newspaper during his Air Force career and later worked as an editor, reporter and photographer for a dozen weekly and daily newspapers in the Midwest and in Oregon, including The Hood River News, The Bulletin in Bend and The Register-Guard in Eugene.

He also taught journalism at the University of Montana, at Biola University in Los Angeles and at the University of Oregon, ending in 2008.

Dean and his wife Lou have spent their vacations for more than a half-century exploring the back roads of Oregon.

  1. Hi Dean……… Wow did you say 10 great grandchildren? Sandy n I have 4 terrific grandchildren……….. great fun to watch them grow up.
    I talked to Barrett after you did…… he seems ok with the change.
    Keep writing. It is easy to just set and do nothing… too easy.
