THE GARDEN

Andy Jones surprises Jane Johnston with a marriage proposal and with the decision to remain in Appleton, Oregon, where he has edited the weekly newspaper, rather than return to his home in Kansas City.

When Andy’s father suffers a heart attack, wedding plans are delayed while Andy returns to Kansas City and eventually decides to accept a newspaper reporting job with the Kansas City Star so he can help care for his father.

Meanwhile, Jane replaces Andy as the weekly newspaper editor in Appleton and reluctantly makes plans to marry him in Kansas City.

Andy’s former girlfriend makes a play for him while Jane debates whether she wants to leave her rural home for what she perceives as a “concrete jungle.”

Other problems complicate their wedding plans, including Andy’s wild ride in a DC-3 plane en route to Oregon and eventually to a place they call “their garden.”
